The article Futurology Methods as an Upgrade of History Teaching advocates for integrating futurology into history education to enhance critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability. Traditionally, history teaching in Croatia has focused on fact retention and identity formation, but recent shifts emphasize developing cognitive skills. The current curriculum, however, is overloaded with content, limiting students’ ability to engage critically and creatively.
The author proposes using futurological methods like forecasting, backcasting, and future scenarios to make history more interdisciplinary and relevant. These methods allow students to explore historical events with a future-oriented perspective, preparing them for upcoming societal challenges. Examples include forecasting goals based on historical contexts, creating future biographies, and using the “future wheel” to map consequences of historical events. This approach aligns with higher-order cognitive skills in Bloom’s Taxonomy, moving history teaching beyond memorization to foster analysis, evaluation, and creativity.
