Join us for an impactful online lecture that brings the Holocaust in Croatia to life through the journeys of two remarkable survivors: Oto Konstein and Vojko Sterk. Both were young boys during World War II, navigating the horrors of the Holocaust with strikingly different fates. While Oto hid in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, Vojko endured the brutalities of Nazi camps. Despite the challenges, both survived to share their testimonies with students, honoring their resilience and will to live.
After the war, Vojko emigrated to Israel, where he played a role in its defense, helped in building the country, and volunteered at Yad Vashem. Oto, meanwhile, remained in Zagreb, where he lives today. Through this lecture, we will explore their lives and the inspiring stories they shared—stories that continue to resonate as powerful reminders of courage, memory, and the human spirit.
This lecture will be led by Miljenko Hajdarović, a Croatian historian and textbook author. With extensive experience in teaching and a commitment to Holocaust education, Miljenko brings a unique perspective to the subject. Over the summer of 2024, he conducted in-depth research on the educational potential of the Jasenovac concentration camp memorial site, uncovering the obstacles that limit quality Holocaust education in Croatia. During the last decade he visited several camps in Europe (Auschwitz, Mathausen, Sachenhause, Theresienstadt, Buchenwald, Drancy, Treblinka, etc.). He is a long-time contributor to the journal Ha-kol and a lecturer at the Shoah Academy of the Jewish Community of Zagreb. Through his expertise, Miljenko provides not only historical insight but also an understanding of the educational challenges and responsibilities of teaching this difficult history.
