Israeli Consul Michal Hershkovitz, First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission in Croatia, gave a 40-minute lecture about Israel at Čakovec High School.
“We want students to get to know a people that has existed for millennia and a state that has existed for about sixty years,” said history and sociology professor Miljenko Hajdarović, who organized the project in cooperation with the embassy. The students were also shown the multi-award-winning Israeli film “Shlomi’s Stars,” about a 16-year-old boy Shlomi. They also had the opportunity to ask the guest questions. They were interested in whether tourists visiting Israel are safe, they were interested in religious and family life, homosexual marriages, whether tattoos are allowed and whether all Jews must serve in the army, and there were also questions about relations with the Palestinians.

It is interesting that Israelis have won as many as ten Nobel Prizes in various fields in the last 11 years. M. Hajdarović said that most prejudices against Jews and other peoples stem from ignorance and lack of knowledge of other cultures, so such lectures contribute to building tolerance and a democratic society.
