Twenty-five educators from 11 countries and four continents have arrived in Poland this week to participate in a landmark professional development program. The initiative, “Auschwitz: The Past is Present,” is a joint effort by the USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education to mark the official 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27.
Miljenko Hajdarovic says that with every new book he reads, testimony he watches or historical site he visits, he finds it harder and harder to comprehend the magnitude of the Holocaust. But he hopes that his upcoming trip to Poland on the Auschwitz: The Past is Present professional development program will help him connect all the dots.
As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, it falls to future generations to ensure their stories remain vibrant and strong.
